You can motivate others at work simply by picking up the phone, according to Verizon Communications CEO Hans Vestberg. "I now have all these friends out there that actually want to work here, work together and get our job done. Bosses should make more of an effort to have regular chats with their employees, research shows. Seventy percent of workers say they want more daily or weekly check-ins than they're currently getting, according to a 2022 report from RedThread Research, a research services company. Kickstarter CEO Everette Taylor, for example, told Make It last month that he wouldn't have gotten his job without it.

Fans can explore and buy exclusive products through a digital rendering of Drake's Toronto mansion. Shopify's latest tool allows the rap star to partner with other brands for unique merch drops. True to form, his approach has been a bit unconventional, with a flagship e-commerce site modeled off his $100 million Toronto mansion, The Embassy. Rather than scroll through the same-old grid of product listings, fans can explore various virtual rooms strewn about with items to buy, all powered by Shopify's e-commerce platform. Shopify Collective is one of several new business-to-business initiatives the company has announced recently, and on the earnings call Finkelstein highlighted the launch of dozens of new B2B features in the last year alone.

Highly successful people possess a skill that helps them get and stay ahead, says a Harvard-trained executive coach: They listen with curiosity. "It's really not that hard," Muriel Wilkins, co-founder of leadership consulting firm Paravis Partners, recently told the "Radical Candor" podcast. Listening is the biggest and the most underused skill that helps drive empathy, and a lot of other things as well." Nearly all (96%) professionals consider themselves to be good listeners, according to 2015 research from Accenture, a IT consulting company. However, 50% of adults don't recall what they hear only moments after hearing it, a 2013 Carnegie Mellon study reported.

Hard work, determination and perseverance can all contribute to a successful career. But there's one key underrated element, according to Everette Taylor, CEO of the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter: Timing. And though he says he's worked diligently to achieve his current stature, timing played a huge role, too. For example, "the way Kickstarter discovered me is that one of the board members happened to be reading a Financial Times article about me," he says. But also the intentionality to put yourself in a position to have new opportunities and then execute on those opportunities," he says.

Then, he sold the company and landed a VP of marketing job at another startup. Two soft skills helped him navigate that journey, he says: empathy and risk taking. At Kickstarter, Taylor recently implemented a four-day workweek for his employees, a risk that comes with pros and cons. For now, it's paying off, Taylor told Time in June: "We've been just as productive or even more productive with a four-day workweek." Other risks aren't worth taking, Taylor says.

Unstable Diffusion, which campaigns to legitimize AI porn, was banned from Kickstarter last month. Originating on Discord, Unstable Diffusion allows users to artificially generate explicit imagery. The group's campaign was active from December 9 to December 21, raising around $56,000 in its 12-day active period. However, they told Insider that the site had not banned all AI art. Everette Taylor, Kickstarter's CEO, seemingly referenced some of the backlash in a blog post about AI art published on December 21.
